How much should a German Shorthaired Pointer weigh?

Most adult GSPs weigh between 20–32 kg (44–70 lb). Males are typically 25–32 kg and females 20–27 kg. Individual variation exists based on frame size and build, but body condition score is a more meaningful guide than a single weight target.

My GSP looks skinny even though the vet says the weight is fine. Why?

GSPs are built lean — a fit, healthy GSP will have a visible waist tuck, a narrow abdominal line, and easily palpable ribs. If your vet has confirmed body condition is appropriate (BCS 4–5/9), your dog is likely just displaying the breed's naturally athletic physique rather than being underweight.

Can a GSP be overweight if it still looks athletic?

Yes. Muscle mass can mask fat accumulation, especially around the abdomen and over the lumbar area. Running your hands firmly over the ribs and back is more informative than visual assessment alone. A dog whose ribs require significant pressure to feel is carrying excess fat even if its legs and hindquarters remain muscular.
