Most veterinary guidelines classify cats as senior from around 11 years of age. Bengals live 12–16 years on average, so semi-annual vet visits from around 9–10 years allows earlier detection of age-related changes. Individual Bengals vary — some remain very active well past 11.

Should I switch my senior Bengal to a low-protein diet?

Not without a specific veterinary reason. Current guidelines (WSAVA) do not support routine protein restriction in senior cats without confirmed kidney disease. Older cats are actually less efficient at utilising protein and may need higher-quality protein sources, not less protein. Speak with your vet before making this change.

My 12-year-old Bengal has slowed down a lot — is this normal ageing?

Some slowing is expected, but significant activity reduction in a Bengal (a naturally high-energy breed) can indicate pain, heart disease, or another underlying condition. A veterinary check including blood work and potentially a cardiac assessment is worthwhile rather than assuming it is purely age-related.
