How It Works & The 10% Rule

Veterinary nutritionists commonly recommend that treats, table scraps, and non-meal snacks make up no more than 10% of a pet's total daily calorie intake (MER), with the remaining 90% coming from a complete and balanced diet.

Max Treat Calories = Daily Maintenance Calories (MER) × 10%

We first calculate your pet's Maintenance Energy Requirement using the same RER/MER formula as our Calorie Calculator, then apply the 10% cap. Dividing that budget by the calorie count on your treat bag's label gives an estimated maximum number of treats per day.

Calculations follow the NRC RER/MER methodology, aligned with WSAVA & AAHA guidelines.
