How It Works

Unlike calorie or portion size, meal frequency isn't a strict math formula -- it's a life-stage-based guideline drawn from the WSAVA Global Nutrition Committee and AAHA Nutrition and Weight Management Guidelines.

  • Puppies under 4 months / kittens under 6 months: 3-4 meals/day
  • Puppies 4-12 months: 2-3 meals/day
  • Adult dogs (1-7 years): 2 meals/day (toy breeds may need a 3rd)
  • Adult cats: 2-3 measured meals/day
  • Senior dogs and cats: 2-3 smaller meals/day

Use this alongside our Food Portion Calculator to know both how much and how often to feed.

Calculations follow the NRC RER/MER methodology, aligned with WSAVA & AAHA guidelines.
