How It Works & The Gear Sizing Formula
Gear sizing follows three separate measurement paths: neck circumference for collars, chest/girth for harnesses, and body length for crates and carriers. The AKC and ASPCA publish general guidance on measuring pets for gear, and the size bands below reflect aggregate industry conventions used across major pet-gear manufacturers.
Collar fit size = Neck circumference + 2 in (2-finger slack rule)
Harness size = Chest/girth circumference → XS/S/M/L/XL band
Crate min length = Body length (nose → tail base) + 4–6 in
→ Round up to nearest standard crate: 24 / 30 / 36 / 42 / 48 in
Interpreting your results: A collar or harness size that sits at the top of its band (e.g. a large chest measurement near 36 in) may fit better in an XL from some brands — always try the garment on and check that you can slide two fingers underneath with mild resistance. For crates, the computed minimum is the floor, not the ceiling: a crate one size larger is fine and often preferred for longer stays, while a crate smaller than the minimum will cause discomfort and is never appropriate. Weight capacity is printed on the crate label; verify it exceeds your pet's current weight before purchase.

How do I measure my dog's neck for a collar?
Use a flexible tape measure or a piece of string around the base of your dog's neck where a collar naturally sits. Add 2 inches to that measurement (the '2-finger rule') so the collar is snug but not tight. The resulting number is your target collar size.
Is collar sizing the same as harness sizing?
No — harnesses are sized by chest/girth circumference, not neck. Always measure the widest part of your dog's chest (just behind the front legs) for harness sizing. Collar and harness sizes often differ by one or two size bands on the same dog, which is normal.
How large should a dog crate or cat carrier be?
The AVMA and airline guidelines call for the pet to be able to stand up fully, turn around completely, and lie stretched out comfortably inside. A practical minimum is the pet's nose-to-tail-base body length plus 4–6 inches for crate length, and similar proportional headroom for height.
My cat's measurement falls between two carrier sizes — which do I choose?
Always size up when in doubt. A carrier that is slightly too large is far better than one that is too small. If the carrier is used for air travel, verify the airline's specific maximum dimensions, as these vary by carrier.
Should I use inches or centimeters for gear sizing?
Either works — just be consistent within a single measurement session. Most North American pet-gear size charts publish in inches, while many European brands use centimeters. This calculator accepts both and converts internally.
