How It Works & The Growth Feeding Formula

Growing puppies and kittens need roughly 2-3 times their Resting Energy Requirement (RER), compared to about 1.2-1.8x for adult pets, to fuel new tissue growth. This calculator uses the same RER formula as our adult calorie calculator, with growth-stage multipliers applied automatically based on age.

RER = 70 × (Weight in kg)^0.75  →  Growth Calories = RER × 2.0 to 3.0

Portion size then converts calories to cups or grams using your food's calories-per-cup value, found on the bag's guaranteed analysis. Meal frequency follows WSAVA/AAHA feeding guidelines for growing pets.

Calculations follow the NRC RER/MER methodology, aligned with WSAVA & AAHA guidelines.
