How It Works & The Water Intake Formula

Veterinary sources, including VCA Animal Hospitals and the Cornell Feline Health Center, generally recommend that healthy dogs and cats drink about 50-60 mL of water per kilogram of body weight per day (roughly 1 fluid ounce per pound).

Daily Water (mL) = Body Weight (kg) × 50 to 60

This total includes moisture from both drinking water and wet/canned food, so pets on a wet-food diet may drink less from the bowl while still meeting their needs. Hot weather, exercise, pregnancy, and nursing all increase fluid requirements above this baseline.

Calculations follow the NRC RER/MER methodology, aligned with WSAVA & AAHA guidelines.
