How We Calculate Your Pet's Calorie and Weight Results
Our tools use the standard veterinary formulas relied upon by animal nutritionists.
The RER Formula
The foundation of our calculator is the Resting Energy Requirement (RER). This is the baseline number of calories your pet needs just to keep their body functioning while at rest—similar to the human basal metabolic rate.
We first convert your pet's weight to kilograms, then apply this widely accepted scientific formula.
The MER Multiplier
Since your pet isn't resting all day, we calculate their Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER). This multiplies the RER baseline by a specific factor depending on their life stage, activity level, and whether they are spayed or neutered.
- Life Stage: Puppies and kittens need significantly more energy for growth (often 2-3x their RER). Senior pets generally need less.
- Spay/Neuter Status: Intact adults require slightly more calories than altered adults.
- Activity Level: A highly active working dog needs a higher multiplier than a couch-potato cat.
Calculating Portion Sizes
Once we know the daily calorie target (MER), we can estimate portions. By default, we use an average of 350 kcal per cup (a common average for dry kibble).
Cups = Daily Calories ÷ Calories per Cup
We also estimate grams based on a general average of 120g per cup of dry food. For the most accurate results, you can adjust the "Calories per Cup" field in our advanced settings to match the exact label on your pet food bag.
