How It Works & The Dog Age Formula

This calculator uses the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) published dog-to-human age chart, which reflects real veterinary developmental milestones rather than the outdated "multiply by 7" myth.

  • Year 1 of a dog's life ≈ 15 human years, for all sizes.
  • Year 2 adds 9 more human years (total ≈ 24), for all sizes.
  • Each year after that adds a size-dependent rate: 4 years (small), 4.5 (medium), 5 (large), or 5.5 (giant) human years per dog year.

Larger dogs tend to age faster and have shorter lifespans on average, which is why the chart applies a bigger multiplier to bigger size categories after year 2.

Calculations follow the NRC RER/MER methodology, aligned with WSAVA & AAHA guidelines.
