How It Works & The Target Weight Formula

This calculator uses a clinical estimation method used in veterinary weight-management protocols (such as the Ohio State University Indoor Pet Initiative and the WSAVA Global Nutrition Toolkit): for each point a pet's Body Condition Score is away from the ideal midpoint of 5 on the 9-point scale, their weight is estimated to differ from their ideal by about 10%.

Target Weight = Current Weight ÷ (1 + 10% × (BCS − 5))

For example, a 50 lb dog with a BCS of 7 (2 points over ideal) has an estimated target weight of 50 ÷ 1.2 ≈ 41.7 lbs. This differs from our Weight Checker tool, which compares weight to breed-average ranges rather than your pet's individual body condition.

Calculations follow the NRC RER/MER methodology, aligned with WSAVA & AAHA guidelines.
