Burmese Senior Care Guide

Burmese cats are long-lived — many reach 16–18 years or beyond. That makes senior care especially important: monitoring for breed-specific conditions, adjusting nutrition, and keeping a playful breed mentally and physically engaged through old age.

The Burmese is one of the longest-lived domestic cat breeds, with a typical life expectancy of 16–18 years. This longevity is wonderful, but it means senior care for a Burmese spans a particularly long and important chapter — beginning around age 11 and potentially continuing for 7 or more years. Getting senior care right for this breed requires attention to its specific health predispositions, its sustained need for social engagement, and the gradual nutritional adjustments that support healthy ageing.

When is a Burmese considered senior?

Most veterinary guidelines define cats as senior from around 11 years of age and geriatric from approximately 15 years. Given the Burmese's extended life expectancy, many individuals remain vigorous and active well past 11. Semi-annual veterinary visits from around 9–10 years allow earlier detection of age-related changes — bloodwork, urinalysis, and blood pressure measurement are particularly important at this stage.

The Burmese's characteristic kitten-like energy typically declines more gradually than in shorter-lived breeds. A notable reduction in activity or play enthusiasm in a Burmese under 12 is more likely to reflect a health issue than normal ageing — investigate rather than accept it as inevitable.

Nutrition adjustments for the senior Burmese

Senior Burmese generally need slightly fewer calories as metabolic rate and lean muscle mass decline, though very active individuals may need little adjustment. Reducing the maintenance energy multiplier from 1.4–1.6 (active adult) to approximately 1.2–1.4 is a reasonable starting point for a less active senior. Body condition score every 4–6 weeks confirms whether the adjustment is appropriate.

A critical point: do not reduce dietary protein in a senior Burmese without a specific veterinary reason. Current WSAVA nutritional guidelines do not support protein restriction in senior cats unless kidney disease is confirmed. Older cats are less efficient at digesting and utilising protein, and may actually need higher-quality protein sources to maintain muscle mass — not less protein. Switching to a low-protein senior formula in a healthy senior can accelerate muscle loss.

The Burmese's predisposition to diabetes mellitus makes weight management especially important in middle and senior age. Both underweight (common in hyperthyroid or chronically ill cats) and overweight (a risk factor for diabetes) are concerns. Monthly weight checks and bi-monthly body condition assessments from around 9 years onward allow early detection of either trend.

Breed-specific health conditions in older Burmese

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is one of the most important conditions to screen for in ageing Burmese. It can develop without obvious symptoms until significantly advanced; an echocardiogram performed by a cardiologist or internal medicine specialist is the gold standard for detection. Annual cardiac screening from around 7–8 years is worth discussing with your veterinarian for this breed.

Diabetes mellitus in Burmese often presents with increased drinking and urination, weight loss despite a normal or increased appetite, and a plantigrade stance (walking on the hocks rather than the toes). Any of these signs in a senior Burmese warrants prompt veterinary evaluation — diabetes in cats is manageable with dietary adjustment and insulin therapy when caught early.

Hypokalaemia (low blood potassium) can cause muscle weakness, altered gait, and neck ventroflexion (drooping head due to neck muscle weakness) at any age but may become more apparent in senior cats whose kidney function affects electrolyte balance. Annual bloodwork that includes electrolytes allows monitoring of potassium levels and early intervention if levels decline.

Feline orofacial pain syndrome (FOPS), associated with the Burmese, can cause episodic facial discomfort and tongue mutilation. While often first seen in younger cats, it can affect cats of any age. If your senior Burmese shows signs of facial pain or difficulty eating, discuss this with your vet promptly.

Activity, enrichment, and quality of life in senior years

Burmese cats retain their sociable, interactive nature into old age — they remain people-oriented and desire regular engagement with their human family throughout their lives. Daily interactive play sessions, adapted to current physical ability, remain important. Lower-impact games (ground-level wand toys, slow-moving targets) may replace high-energy jumping activities as joint mobility changes with age.

Arthritis is not uncommon in older cats and can be subtle in Burmese who are stoic about discomfort. Signs include hesitation before jumping onto surfaces they used to reach easily, reduced grooming of hard-to-reach areas, and changed litter box behaviour. If you notice these signs in your senior Burmese, a veterinary assessment and discussion of pain management options is worthwhile — quality of life in the senior years is significantly improved by addressing pain early.

Maintain environmental enrichment — window perches at accessible heights, gentle puzzle feeders, and daily social time — because mental stimulation supports cognitive health in ageing cats. Some senior cats develop feline cognitive dysfunction (similar to dementia in humans) characterised by disorientation, changed sleep patterns, and altered social behaviour. Discuss these signs with your vet if they emerge.
