Dietary fat sometimes gets treated as the enemy in pet nutrition discussions, but for cats it plays a genuinely essential role -- not just as an energy source, but as the carrier for fat-soluble vitamins and as the only dietary source of certain fatty acids cats cannot synthesise themselves. Getting fat intake right means providing enough for these critical functions while also keeping the calorie-dense nature of fat in mind for weight management.

Fat's essential roles in cat nutrition

Fat serves several distinct functions in a cat's diet. As an energy source, fat is the most calorie-dense macronutrient -- providing approximately 9 kcal per gram compared to roughly 4 kcal per gram for protein and carbohydrates. For obligate carnivores like cats, whose natural diet (prey animals) is high in both protein and fat and low in carbohydrates, fat is the primary calorie source alongside protein.

Fat also acts as the carrier for fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K). Without adequate dietary fat, these vitamins cannot be absorbed effectively even if they're present in the food. Vitamin A deficiency, for example, can affect vision, immune function, and skin health; vitamin E deficiency is linked to the steatitis (yellow fat disease) seen in cats fed excessive quantities of oily fish without adequate vitamin E. Beyond vitamins, fat improves food palatability and contributes to healthy skin and coat condition.

AAFCO minimum fat requirements

AAFCO sets a minimum of 9% fat on a dry matter basis for adult cats and 9% for kittens and cats during growth or reproduction -- the same minimum for both life stages, though growing cats often benefit from diets that exceed this minimum to support development.

Most commercial cat foods, particularly those formulated as complete and balanced, comfortably exceed this minimum. The question for most cat owners is less about meeting the minimum and more about how fat levels interact with their cat's calorie needs -- particularly for indoor, sedentary cats where total calorie intake needs to be managed.

Essential fatty acids cats depend on

Two categories of fatty acids are particularly important for cats: omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, some of which cats cannot synthesise adequately and must consume from their diet.

Arachidonic acid is an omega-6 fatty acid that cats cannot synthesise in adequate amounts from its precursor (linoleic acid) because they have very low activity of the enzyme delta-6-desaturase. Dogs and humans can convert linoleic acid to arachidonic acid; cats largely cannot. Arachidonic acid is involved in inflammation regulation, reproduction, and skin barrier function. Animal-based fats (particularly from meat and organ tissue) are the primary dietary source.

On the omega-3 side, EPA and DHA (found in fish oil and marine sources) are important for brain development, vision, and anti-inflammatory processes. Cats have limited ability to convert ALA (found in plant oils) to EPA and DHA, so marine-source omega-3s are the more relevant dietary form. Many cat food formulations include fish oil or fish meal specifically to provide these fatty acids.

AAFCO requires a minimum of 0.5% linoleic acid and 0.02% arachidonic acid on a dry matter basis for adult cats. These minimums are met by virtually all complete commercial cat foods formulated with animal proteins.

Fat, calories, and weight management for cats

Because fat is calorie-dense at roughly 9 kcal per gram, the fat content of a food has a significant impact on its caloric density. A cat food with 20% fat (dry matter) will be meaningfully more calorie-dense than one with 10% fat, even if the protein content is similar. This matters most for indoor, sedentary cats, whose daily calorie budget is often under 200–220 calories -- a small portion of a high-fat food can cover a large fraction of that budget.

Weight-management cat foods typically reduce fat content as one of the primary ways to lower calorie density while keeping total food volume (and satiety) reasonable. However, fat content should not be reduced so aggressively that it falls below the minimum levels needed for essential fatty acid supply and fat-soluble vitamin absorption. Foods formulated for weight management by reputable manufacturers balance these considerations.

For overweight cats, the priority is a gradual, veterinarian-guided reduction in total calorie intake rather than dramatic changes to any single macronutrient. Any existing health conditions that affect fat metabolism -- pancreatitis, for example -- change the picture further and need veterinary guidance.

Common mistakes and misconceptions

The most common misconception is that low-fat cat food is automatically healthier or better for weight management. While reducing fat can lower calorie density, an overly fat-restricted diet may not provide adequate arachidonic acid, fat-soluble vitamins, or palatability -- cats that don't find their food palatable will often undereat or refuse it entirely, which creates a different nutritional problem.

Another mistake is feeding cats large amounts of oily fish (such as tuna or sardines) without ensuring adequate vitamin E intake. Oily fish is high in unsaturated fat but is associated with vitamin E depletion when fed in excess -- the steatitis risk most often cited in tuna-heavy diets. Occasional fish treats are not a concern; regular fish-heavy meals can be.

Finally, assuming that 'grain-free' or 'natural' labelling signals lower fat content is not reliable. Grain-free cat foods often substitute peas, lentils, or potatoes for grains, which does not necessarily reduce fat -- and some grain-free foods are higher in fat than grain-inclusive alternatives. Checking the guaranteed analysis on the food label is the accurate way to compare.

When to discuss fat intake with your vet

For most healthy cats on a complete commercial diet, fat intake doesn't require specific management -- the food is formulated to meet requirements. Veterinary involvement is most important in a few situations: cats with pancreatitis or other conditions affecting fat digestion, cats on homemade diets where fat sources and essential fatty acid content need to be explicitly verified, and cats that are significantly overweight and being moved to a calorie-restricted diet.

A dull or greasy coat, unexplained weight loss despite adequate feeding, or fat-related digestive signs (vomiting, loose stools, or pain after eating) are symptoms worth discussing with a vet rather than addressing through food adjustments alone.
