A pregnant or nursing cat has dramatically increased nutritional needs that change across each stage of gestation and lactation. Here's how to feed a queen well from conception through weaning.

Pregnancy and nursing place some of the highest nutritional demands of any life stage on a cat. A queen (intact female cat) needs meaningfully more calories, protein, and certain key nutrients across the approximately 63-65 days of gestation and for the weeks of nursing that follow -- and the way those needs change across the different stages requires some planning.

This article covers what a pregnant and nursing cat actually needs nutritionally, when to make the dietary transition, how to monitor her condition, and when veterinary involvement is most important.

The gestational timeline and how nutrition needs change

A cat's pregnancy typically lasts approximately 63-65 days (about 9 weeks). Nutritional needs do not jump dramatically at the start of pregnancy -- in the early weeks of gestation, a queen's calorie needs increase only modestly. The significant increase comes in the second half of pregnancy, as the fetuses grow rapidly and the queen's body also begins preparing for lactation.

By the final weeks of gestation, a pregnant queen's calorie intake typically needs to be meaningfully above her pre-pregnancy maintenance level. Veterinary nutrition references suggest that energy needs during late gestation may be approximately 25-50% above maintenance, though the exact increase depends on litter size and the individual cat. A queen carrying a large litter has higher needs than one with two or three kittens.

The right food for pregnancy: kitten food

The dietary recommendation during pregnancy -- and throughout lactation -- is to transition to a high-quality kitten food (or a food labeled for 'all life stages,' which includes growth/reproduction). This is not an arbitrary choice: kitten food is formulated with higher protein density, higher fat content, and elevated levels of key nutrients (including DHA for neurological development of kittens, calcium for bone development, and increased calorie density) that support both fetal growth and the queen's own changing body condition.

Adult maintenance food, even a high-quality one, is not formulated to meet the elevated demands of gestation and lactation. Feeding an adult maintenance diet during pregnancy risks nutritional shortfalls at a time when both the queen and developing kittens need more.

The transition to kitten food is typically recommended around the time of confirmed pregnancy or shortly after -- a gradual transition over 7-10 days (mixing increasing amounts of the new food with the current food) minimizes digestive upset.

Feeding during lactation: the peak demand

Lactation places even higher calorie demands on a queen than late gestation. A nursing queen producing milk for a full litter may need two to three times her normal maintenance calorie intake, depending on litter size. This is one of the most calorie-intensive physiological states in feline life.

During the nursing period, free-choice feeding (leaving food available at all times) is often recommended rather than measured meals, specifically because the demand is high enough that restricting access can make it difficult for a queen to consume enough. She should also have continuous access to fresh water, since milk production requires significant fluid intake.

If a queen is losing significant body condition (visibly losing muscle or fat) during lactation despite seemingly adequate food access, this is worth a veterinary conversation -- it may indicate she needs a higher-calorie food option, more frequent feeding opportunities, or that litter size is exceptionally large.

Key nutrients to pay attention to

Protein is the most critical macronutrient during pregnancy and lactation in cats. As obligate carnivores, cats require high levels of animal-source protein, and their need increases during gestation and lactation to support fetal development and milk production. A high-quality kitten or all-life-stages food built around a named animal protein source (chicken, turkey, fish) generally provides this.

Calcium and phosphorus are important for fetal bone development and for the queen's own bone density, which can be drawn upon during lactation. Kitten-formulated foods include appropriate levels of these minerals. Supplementing calcium beyond what is already in a complete diet is generally not recommended without veterinary guidance -- imbalanced calcium supplementation can actually be harmful.

DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), an omega-3 fatty acid, is important for the neurological and visual development of kittens. Many high-quality kitten foods include DHA; if the food does not, a vet may recommend a species-appropriate DHA supplement.

Monitoring the queen's condition during pregnancy and nursing

A healthy queen should gain weight gradually through pregnancy, reflecting the growth of the fetuses and her own preparation for lactation. It is normal and expected for a queen to gain body weight during gestation -- she should not be on a calorie-restricted diet during this period. However, very rapid or excessive weight gain is also worth monitoring.

During lactation, it is normal for a queen to be slightly leaner than pre-pregnancy, since the calorie demands of nursing are so high. If she is losing condition rapidly (visibly wasting muscle or appearing significantly underweight), the feeding plan needs adjustment and a vet should be consulted.

Regular veterinary checkups during pregnancy -- ideally at least one visit to confirm pregnancy, assess litter size, and discuss care -- are valuable for first-time queens or any cat with a health history that might complicate pregnancy.

After weaning: transitioning back to adult food

Once kittens are weaned (typically around 8 weeks of age), the queen's calorie needs drop back significantly. Continuing to feed kitten food at lactation quantities after weaning will lead to rapid weight gain. The transition back to an adult maintenance diet -- again, gradually over 7-10 days -- is appropriate once kittens are eating independently and nursing has fully stopped.

If the queen was spayed after this litter, her calorie needs will be slightly lower than her pre-pregnancy intact maintenance level. Monitoring her weight in the months after weaning and adjusting portions accordingly prevents post-nursing weight gain.
