Devon Rex Growth Chart: What to Expect

Growth milestones by age: birth to 12 months

At birth, Devon Rex kittens typically weigh 80–110 g. They double their birth weight within the first two weeks of life and should be visibly growing day by day during the nursing phase. By 8 weeks, a healthy Devon Rex kitten generally weighs between 700 g and 1 kg — the breed is naturally smaller than many, and weights toward the lower end of this range are not automatically cause for concern if the kitten is active, nursing or eating well, and gaining consistently.

From 2–6 months, growth is the fastest it will ever be. Devon Rex kittens in this phase typically gain 80–120 g per week. By 4 months, most are in the 1.5–2.5 kg range; by 6 months, 2–3.5 kg depending on sex. Males grow noticeably faster than females in this phase.

From 6 to 12 months, the Devon Rex approaches adult proportions. Growth slows but continues, particularly in muscle development. By 12 months, most Devon Rex cats are at or near their adult weight of 2.7–4.5 kg. Some males may continue to fill out slightly until 15 months, but significant growth after 12 months is not typical for this breed.

Factors that affect Devon Rex kitten growth

Nutrition is the dominant controllable factor. Devon Rex kittens need a high-quality growth formula with at least 30% protein (dry matter basis) and adequate calories to support both their rapid physical development and their genuinely high energy output. Restricting food during the growth phase in the belief that the breed 'should be small' can result in stunted development, poor muscle mass, and increased susceptibility to illness.

The Devon Rex's naturally elevated activity level means kittens burn significant energy through play well before the growth phase is complete. Ensuring the food intake keeps pace with both growth demands and activity-related energy expenditure is more important for this breed than for calmer, less active kittens.

Health status is the second major factor. Devon Rex kittens are predisposed to hereditary myopathy, which can reduce muscle development and physical stamina. Any kitten that seems weaker, less coordinated, or less physically capable than expected should be evaluated by a veterinarian — do not assume it is simply a 'smaller' or 'calmer' individual without professional assessment.

What healthy growth looks like — and red flags

A growing Devon Rex kitten should gain weight consistently each week. Any week without weight gain, or any period of weight loss, is a veterinary concern — kittens should not plateau or drop during the growth phase unless transitioning between feeding methods (e.g., weaning from mother's milk to solid food). Weigh kittens weekly at home using a kitchen scale and log the results.

A common misconception is that a Devon Rex kitten's large ears and fine-boned appearance mean it is 'supposed to look fragile.' A healthy Devon Rex kitten is in fact quite active, playful, and alert — they are not a delicate breed despite their appearance. A kitten that is genuinely lethargic, failing to gain weight, or showing poor muscle tone is not displaying normal breed characteristics; it is displaying health warning signs.

Transitioning from kitten to adult food

Around 10–12 months, most Devon Rex cats can transition from kitten food (or an all-life-stages formula) to an adult formula. This should be done gradually over 7–10 days by mixing increasing proportions of the new food into the old. Given the breed's higher than average activity level, choose an adult formula that remains high in protein — some 'maintenance' formulas reduce protein to levels that may not suit an active Devon Rex well. If uncertain, your veterinarian can recommend an appropriate diet for your individual cat's adult size and activity level.
