Of the three major macronutrients in dog food, carbohydrates are the most debated. Dogs have no established dietary requirement for carbohydrates -- meaning there is no AAFCO minimum -- yet most commercial dry dog foods contain anywhere from 30-60% carbohydrate on a dry matter basis. Understanding why carbs are there, what they do, and what the practical considerations are helps you evaluate any food with more confidence.

All of these are digestible carbohydrate sources for dogs, though digestibility can vary somewhat by how they are processed -- cooked and extruded starches are generally well-absorbed.

Grain-based carbohydrates (rice, oats, barley) have a long history of use in commercial pet food. Grain-free foods substitute starchy vegetables and legumes for grains -- they are not lower in carbohydrates overall, just different sources. The FDA has been investigating a potential association between grain-free diets high in legumes (peas, lentils) and a type of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs; the investigation is ongoing and causation has not been established, but it is a reason to be aware of the discussion when choosing a grain-free food.

Do dogs need to eat low-carb?

For most healthy dogs, the carbohydrate percentage in a nutritionally complete commercial food -- whether higher or lower -- is less important than the overall calorie balance, protein and fat quality, and whether the food meets AAFCO nutritional adequacy standards for their life stage.

Common misconceptions about carbs in dog food

One of the most widespread misconceptions is that carbohydrates in dog food are purely 'filler' with no nutritional value. Digestible carbohydrates provide energy, and fiber provides meaningful digestive benefits -- neither is nutritionally inert.

Another is that grain-free automatically means lower carbohydrate. Most grain-free kibbles substitute one starchy ingredient (grains) for another (potatoes, peas, lentils) and end up with similar or even higher total carbohydrate content than grain-inclusive formulas. Checking the guaranteed analysis and ingredient list is more informative than the 'grain-free' label alone.
