A pregnant dog's nutritional needs change significantly across gestation and into lactation. Here is what to feed, when to increase calories, and what to watch for at each stage.

Canine pregnancy (gestation) lasts approximately 63 days from conception — a relatively short window that passes through distinct nutritional phases. Getting nutrition right during this period supports not only the mother's health but the development, birth weight, and early vigour of the puppies. Getting it wrong — particularly through overfeeding early in pregnancy or underfeeding during late gestation and lactation — can have lasting consequences for both dam and offspring.

This guide covers the practical nutritional requirements at each stage: early gestation, late gestation, and the demanding lactation period that follows.

Early gestation: weeks 1–5

For the first four to five weeks of pregnancy, a healthy adult female's energy needs increase only modestly, if at all. Foetal development at this stage is focused on organogenesis (organ formation) rather than rapid size increase, and the nutritional priority is quality rather than quantity. Continuing a high-quality, nutritionally complete maintenance diet is generally appropriate at this stage.

Calorie increases during early gestation should be resisted — overfeeding in the first half of pregnancy is a common cause of excessive maternal weight gain that complicates delivery and recovery. The exception would be a female who was underweight going into pregnancy, where working with a vet to bring her to an appropriate condition before significant calorie increases is the right approach.

Transitioning to a growth-formulated food

Around weeks 5–6 of gestation, as foetal growth accelerates meaningfully, transitioning the dam to a puppy or growth-formulated food is a widely recommended strategy. Foods meeting AAFCO nutritional profiles for growth and reproduction are specifically formulated to support the elevated protein, energy, and calcium demands of late pregnancy and lactation, without requiring supplementation in most cases.

The transition should be gradual — mixing increasing proportions of the new food over 7–10 days to avoid digestive upset. This also happens to be the point at which appetite can begin to decrease due to the physical pressure of a growing litter on the stomach, so palatability matters; growth formulas are generally more energy-dense, meaning adequate calories can be delivered in a smaller volume.

Late gestation: weeks 6–9

Calorie needs increase substantially in the final weeks of pregnancy, as foetal growth is most rapid during this period. Energy intake at whelping (birth) is typically 25–50% above the dog's pre-pregnancy maintenance requirement, depending on litter size. Rather than a single step increase, this should be a gradual ramp-up, increasing portion size by roughly 10% per week from week 6 onward and allowing appetite to guide the final amount.

As the uterus expands, stomach capacity decreases. Moving to three or four smaller meals per day in the final weeks is often more comfortable for the dam and helps ensure adequate total intake without the discomfort of large meals. Fresh water should be continuously available — intake typically increases in late gestation.

Supplementation: what to avoid and what to discuss with your vet

Indiscriminate supplementation during pregnancy can cause as many problems as nutritional deficiency. Calcium supplementation during gestation is specifically contraindicated for most dogs — excess dietary calcium during pregnancy has been linked to eclampsia (milk fever) after whelping, because it downregulates the body's calcium-regulating mechanisms. A properly formulated growth/reproduction diet should provide adequate calcium without supplementation.

Similarly, vitamin A toxicity from oversupplementation has been associated with foetal malformations in dogs. If you are feeding a nutritionally complete, AAFCO-compliant puppy or growth formula, additional supplementation is generally neither needed nor advisable without explicit veterinary guidance. If there is any concern about nutritional adequacy or specific deficiencies, a vet consultation before supplementing is the right path.

Lactation: the highest nutritional demand

Lactation is the most energetically demanding period in a dog's life. A nursing dam producing milk for a full litter can require two to four times her pre-pregnancy maintenance calorie intake — significantly more than pregnancy itself. This is not the time for calorie restriction.

Continuing the puppy/growth formula through the entire lactation period is the standard recommendation. Meals should be available more freely during peak lactation (typically weeks 2–4 post-whelping) — some dogs do best with food available throughout the day rather than fixed meals, to allow them to eat as their appetite dictates. As puppies start weaning (around 3–4 weeks of age), the dam's food intake can be gradually reduced in line with the declining milk demand.

Common mistakes and when to involve your vet

One of the most common nutritional mistakes in canine pregnancy is overfeeding in the first half of gestation. Excessive weight gain before week 5 increases the risk of whelping complications (dystocia) from overly large puppies or reduced maternal stamina — and it does not meaningfully benefit the developing foetuses at that stage, since their calorie demands are low.

Conversely, failing to increase food adequately in late gestation and during lactation is a serious risk for both dam and puppies. A dam who cannot meet her own calorie needs through milk production will mobilise body reserves; puppies from a nutritionally depleted dam may have lower birth weights and weaker immune systems.

Any of the following warrant prompt veterinary contact: significant weight loss during pregnancy, poor appetite lasting more than 24 hours in the final weeks of gestation, signs of distress or discomfort during feeding, discharge before the expected whelping date, or any concern about puppy development or litter size after a scan. Postpartum, signs of eclampsia — restlessness, muscle tremors, hypersensitivity, difficulty walking — are a veterinary emergency.
