Foods Cats Should Never Eat

Several common human foods are genuinely toxic to cats -- some dangerously so in very small amounts. Here is what to keep out of reach and what to do if your cat gets into something it should not.

Cats are famously selective eaters, but that instinct doesn't always protect them from household foods that are actually toxic. Some of the most dangerous substances for cats are foods we eat every day without a second thought -- onions, garlic, grapes -- and the risk is real enough that a small amount can cause serious harm.

This article covers the foods that pose a genuine danger to cats, explains what makes each one harmful, and walks through what to do if your cat has eaten something it shouldn't have.

Onions, garlic, and the allium family

Onions, garlic, leeks, chives, and shallots all belong to the allium family, and all of them are toxic to cats. These plants contain compounds (organosulfoxides) that damage red blood cells, leading to a form of anemia called Heinz body anemia. Cats are significantly more sensitive to allium toxicity than dogs -- even small amounts, including cooked forms, powdered forms (garlic powder, onion powder), and ingredients hidden in sauces or broths, can cause toxicity.

Signs may not appear immediately; they often develop over several days and can include lethargy, pale or yellowish gums, reduced appetite, and weakness. If your cat has eaten any quantity of onion or garlic, contacting a vet rather than waiting to see if symptoms develop is the right call.

Chocolate and caffeine

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, both of which cats process very poorly. While cats are less likely than dogs to voluntarily eat chocolate (they lack sweet taste receptors), any ingestion is a concern. Theobromine toxicity can cause vomiting, diarrhea, rapid breathing, muscle tremors, and in serious cases, seizures. Darker chocolate and baking chocolate contain higher concentrations than milk chocolate, but all forms should be kept away from cats.

Caffeine from coffee, tea, energy drinks, or caffeine-containing medications carries similar risks and should equally be kept out of reach.

Grapes and raisins

Grapes and raisins are known to be toxic to dogs, and while the research in cats is less extensive, the same caution applies -- the toxic mechanism is not fully understood, which means there is no known safe amount. Given that grape and raisin toxicity in dogs can cause acute kidney failure, erring firmly on the side of caution with cats is warranted. Do not offer grapes or raisins as treats, and be aware of foods that contain raisins (certain cereals, baked goods, trail mixes).

Alcohol and raw yeast dough

Alcohol in any form -- wine, beer, spirits, or foods cooked with alcohol -- is toxic to cats. Their liver is far less equipped to process ethanol than a human liver, meaning even a small quantity can cause serious effects: disorientation, breathing difficulties, low body temperature, and in serious cases, coma or death. There is no safe or funny amount to offer.

Raw yeast dough poses a double hazard. It expands in the warm, moist environment of the stomach, which can cause painful bloating. As yeast ferments, it also produces alcohol, adding a toxicity risk on top of the physical one. Baked bread is fine; raw dough is not.

Xylitol

Xylitol is an artificial sweetener found in sugar-free gum, some peanut butters, certain baked goods, toothpaste, and a growing number of 'reduced sugar' products. It is well-established as severely toxic to dogs, causing dangerously low blood sugar and potential liver damage. Research in cats is more limited, but given the mechanism and cats' general sensitivity to many compounds, xylitol-containing products should be kept away from cats as a firm precaution. Always check ingredient labels on anything sweetened before sharing.

Lily plants -- a critical non-food hazard

Lilies are not food, but they belong in this article because their toxicity to cats is extreme and widely underappreciated. True lilies (Easter lily, Tiger lily, Asiatic lily, Day lily) are severely nephrotoxic to cats -- even a small amount of pollen, a few leaves, or the water from a vase containing lilies can cause acute kidney failure. This is a genuine emergency: if your cat has had any contact with a true lily, treat it as urgent and contact a vet immediately, even before symptoms appear. Time is critical.

Peace lilies and calla lilies are a different family and cause milder irritation (mouth and digestive upset) rather than kidney failure, but true lilies should simply not be present in a home with cats.

What to do if your cat eats something toxic

If you know or strongly suspect your cat has eaten a toxic food, do not wait for symptoms. Contact your veterinarian or an animal poison control hotline as soon as possible. Time matters with many toxins -- earlier intervention gives more options. Have the product name or ingredient list ready if you can, along with an estimate of how much your cat ate and when.

Do not attempt to induce vomiting at home without veterinary guidance -- in cats, this carries risks and is not always appropriate. A vet can advise whether it's warranted based on what was ingested and how recently.

Common signs that something may have been ingested and is causing a problem include sudden vomiting or diarrhea, drooling, lethargy, uncoordinated movement, pale or yellowish gums, or any sudden behavioral change. These signs combined with a known exposure always warrant prompt veterinary contact.
