How Many Calories Should a Labrador Eat?

Labrador Retrievers are food-motivated and prone to weight gain. Here's how to estimate a healthy daily calorie target by age, weight, and activity level.

Labradors are famous for two things: their friendly temperament, and their bottomless appetite. That combination makes them one of the breeds most likely to end up overweight, which is exactly why getting their daily calorie target right matters more for a Lab than for most other dogs.

The short answer

Most adult Labradors need somewhere between 1,700 and 2,400 calories per day, depending on their weight, age, activity level, and whether they're spayed or neutered. A working, athletic adult Lab at the upper end of the breed's 25-36 kg (55-80 lb) ideal weight range will sit near the top of that range; a mostly sedentary, spayed/neutered Lab at a lower weight will sit near the bottom.

That's a wide range on purpose -- a generic number isn't useful for an individual dog. The most reliable way to get a number specific to your Labrador is to plug their actual weight, age, and activity level into a calorie calculator that uses the standard resting-energy-requirement formula.

Why Labradors need closer portion control than most breeds

Labradors carry a genetic mutation (in the POMC gene) that's unusually common in the breed and is linked to a stronger drive to eat and a slower feeling of fullness. In practice, that means a Lab will rarely self-regulate the way some other breeds do -- if you free-feed or eyeball portions, weight creeps up gradually and can be hard to notice until it's a real problem.

Splitting food into two measured meals a day, weighing food rather than scooping by eye, and accounting for treats within the daily total are the three habits that make the biggest difference for this breed.

Adjusting for life stage and activity

Puppies and young, highly active working Labs need meaningfully more calories per pound of body weight than a middle-aged, mostly-walked companion dog. Spaying/neutering also lowers metabolic needs somewhat, which is one of the most common reasons a Lab's ideal portion drops after the procedure even though nothing else about their routine changed.
