How the Food Portion Calculator Works

The Food Portion Calculator converts your pet's daily calorie target into a practical serving size in cups and grams, based on the calorie density of their specific food. Here's the formula and how to read the result.

Knowing your pet's daily calorie target is useful -- but on its own it doesn't tell you how much food to put in the bowl. That step requires knowing how calorie-dense your specific food is, since two kibbles that look identical in the scoop can have meaningfully different calorie contents per cup. The Food Portion Calculator bridges this gap, converting a calorie target into a practical daily serving size in both cups and grams.

The result gives you a number you can measure and repeat consistently, removing the guesswork that comes from 'eyeballing' portions -- one of the most common causes of gradual, unintended weight gain in pets.

How the Calculation Works

The calculator uses calculatePortion(dailyCalories, caloriesPerCup) from petCalculations.ts. The formula is straightforward: Daily cups = daily calorie target ÷ calories per cup of food. Grams = cups × APPROX_GRAMS_PER_CUP, where APPROX_GRAMS_PER_CUP = 120.

The default value for calories per cup, if you don't enter one, is DEFAULT_CALORIES_PER_CUP = 350 kcal/cup -- a rough average for a generic dry kibble. This default exists to give a ballpark, but it can differ significantly from your pet's actual food: kibbles range from around 280 to 420 kcal/cup, and wet foods are much lower per gram of food weight.

Your pet's daily calorie target (the numerator) comes from the MER calculation: RER × life-stage/activity factor, where RER = 70 × (weight in kg)^0.75. The Food Portion Calculator takes this number directly from the Calorie Calculator output.

The grams conversion uses a fixed 120 g/cup approximation. This is an average for dry kibble density -- denser foods pack more grams into a cup, lighter foods less. For precise gram weights, a kitchen scale is always more accurate than the cup-based estimate.

Putting the Result into Practice

Find the calorie density (kcal per cup or kcal per 100 g) for your pet's specific food. This is printed on most quality pet food packaging under 'calorie content' or 'metabolizable energy', and is available on most manufacturers' websites. Enter this number into the calculator rather than using the default to get a result tailored to your actual food.

Weigh rather than scoop if possible. Cup measurements for dry kibble are notoriously inconsistent -- the same 'cup' can hold anywhere from 100 to 150 g depending on how the scoop is filled. A basic kitchen scale measuring to the nearest gram removes this source of error entirely and makes portion consistency easy.

Split the daily total across meals rather than giving it all at once. The number the calculator produces is a full-day total. Most adult dogs and cats do best on two measured meals per day (more for puppies and kittens -- see the Meal Frequency Calculator for life-stage guidance).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using the default calorie-per-cup value without checking your actual food's label. A food that's 420 kcal/cup versus one at 280 kcal/cup produces a 50% difference in the daily serving size for the same calorie target -- this is one of the most impactful variables to get right.

Scooping loosely into a measuring cup rather than leveling it. A heaped scoop of kibble can contain 20-30% more food than a leveled one, meaning a pet who appears to be 'eating the right amount' by scooping is actually eating significantly more. Weighing removes this inconsistency.

Forgetting to account for treats in the daily total. The Food Portion Calculator outputs the calories needed from main meals. If your pet is also receiving treat calories (up to 10% of the daily total), those should be subtracted from the main meal portion to keep total daily intake on target.

Not adjusting the portion as the pet's weight changes. If a pet is on a weight-loss plan and their weight drops, the MER (and therefore the ideal portion) changes too. Recalculating every 4-6 weeks during weight management keeps the target current rather than letting the plan plateau.

Interpreting Your Result

The cups and grams figures are a starting daily total to measure and then refine over 4-6 weeks based on actual weight change. If weight is stable and the pet is at an ideal BCS, the portion is working. If weight is trending up at this portion, reduce by about 10% and recheck. If weight is trending down and the pet is already at an ideal weight, increase by 10%.

For wet food, the same logic applies but the calorie density per gram is much lower than dry kibble -- a wet food at 90-100 kcal per 100 g requires a much larger volume serving than a kibble at 350-400 kcal per cup for the same calorie total. Always use the food-specific figure.
