How the MER Calculator Works
Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER) is what a healthy, normally active pet actually needs to eat each day — RER multiplied by a life-stage and activity factor. This guide explains each factor in the table and how to pick the right one.
If RER tells you how many calories a pet needs to simply exist, MER tells you how many it needs to live its actual life. Maintenance Energy Requirement is the number you feed to day to day — the full daily calorie target for a healthy pet doing its normal activities, at its current life stage, with its reproductive status taken into account.
The MER Calculator applies a multiplier (the MER factor) to the RER baseline. That factor is where most of the nuance lives: it accounts for whether a pet is a young puppy or kitten, a moderate adult, a senior, intact or spayed/neutered, and how active it is. Getting the factor right is more important than many owners realise — it can swing the daily calorie target by 40% or more in either direction.
How the Calculation Works
Step 1 — RER: RER (kcal/day) = 70 × (weight in kg)^0.75. This is calculated automatically from the weight you enter.
Step 2 — MER factor: a multiplier is selected based on species, life stage, activity level, and spay/neuter status (see the factor table below). MER = RER × factor.

The MER Factor Table Explained
Puppies and kittens under ~4 months (very young): factor ≈ 3.0 (adjusted ±10% for low/high activity). Growth at this stage is so rapid and energy-dense that young animals need roughly triple their resting requirement. A very young puppy that barely exercises still scores 2.7; a highly active one scores 3.3.
Puppies (4–12 months) and kittens (2–12 months): base factor ≈ 2.0 for puppies, 2.5 for kittens, adjusted ±10% for activity. Kittens have a higher base factor than puppies of equivalent age because cats have a higher metabolic rate relative to body size at this stage.
Adult intact dogs: base factor 1.8, adjusted by activity — low activity ×0.85 (≈1.53), moderate ×1.0 (1.8), high ×1.4 (≈2.52). Intact dogs tend to have slightly higher maintenance needs than their spayed/neutered counterparts.
Adult spayed/neutered dogs: base factor 1.6, same activity adjustments — low ≈1.36, moderate 1.6, high ≈2.24. This is one of the most common surprises for owners: spaying or neutering genuinely reduces daily calorie needs, which is why weight often creeps up after the procedure if portions are not recalibrated.
Senior dogs (7+ years): the adult base factor is reduced by a further 10% (multiplied by 0.9) to account for lower activity and reduced lean muscle mass at rest. A spayed senior dog on low activity has a factor around 1.22; a high-activity intact senior is around 2.27.
Adult intact cats: base factor 1.4, activity adjustments — low ×0.85 (≈1.19), moderate ×1.0 (1.4), high ×1.25 (1.75).
Adult spayed/neutered cats: base factor 1.2, activity adjustments — low ≈1.02, moderate 1.2, high 1.5. Spayed/neutered cats have notably lower MER factors than intact cats, which is a key reason neutered indoor cats are so prone to gradual weight gain on standard food portions.
Senior cats (10+ years): cat senior factor applies the same 0.9 reduction on the adult base.
Practical Guidance: Acting on Your MER
Your MER result is a daily kilocalorie target. Divide it by the caloric density of your pet's food (kcal per cup or per 100 g, found on the packaging or manufacturer website) to get a daily serving size. Weighing food on a kitchen scale is more accurate than measuring by volume — cup density varies enough across kibble brands to matter over weeks.
If your pet's weight is not stable on the MER-derived portion, the most likely causes are: the activity level selected does not quite match the pet's actual lifestyle, treats and table scraps are adding uncounted calories, or the food's stated calorie density is different from what you used. Adjusting the activity level up or down by one step and recalculating is usually the fastest way to fine-tune.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Not adjusting after spaying or neutering. The MER factor drops meaningfully after the procedure for both dogs and cats. If you keep feeding the pre-surgery portion, gradual weight gain is the predictable result. Update the spay/neuter field and recalculate as soon as possible after surgery.
Choosing activity level based on enthusiasm rather than actual output. A dog that is excited indoors but gets one short walk a day is a low- to moderate-activity dog, not a high one. Overestimating activity is one of the most common reasons pets on 'correctly portioned' food still gain weight.
Using the MER result from when the pet was a different weight. MER scales with weight — if your pet has lost 2 kg on a diet, their new MER is lower too. Recalculate every time you have a fresh weight measurement.
Applying a growing-pet factor to an adult pet. The puppy/kitten factors (2.0–3.0) are much higher than adult factors. Accidentally selecting the wrong life stage for a large-breed dog that still looks young can add hundreds of calories per day to the target.
Interpreting Your Result
A typical healthy adult spayed/neutered medium-sized dog (15 kg, moderate activity) has an MER of roughly 70 × (15)^0.75 × 1.6 ≈ 70 × 8.28 × 1.6 ≈ 926 kcal/day. A cat in the same scenario at 4 kg: 70 × (4)^0.75 × 1.2 ≈ 70 × 2.83 × 1.2 ≈ 237 kcal/day. These numbers are in the expected range for their sizes and confirm the calculator is working correctly.
If your result seems unexpectedly high or low, check: (1) that the weight is in the correct unit, (2) that the life stage matches the pet's actual age, and (3) that the activity level is honest rather than aspirational.
Always involve a vet when setting feeding targets for pets with medical conditions, pets recovering from illness, pregnant or nursing animals, or pets that are significantly overweight or underweight — those situations call for more than a standard MER formula.
