How the RER Calculator Works
Resting Energy Requirement (RER) is the baseline calorie number vets use for hospitalized and critically ill pets — and the foundation of every other energy calculation. Here is the formula and when RER alone (not MER) is the number that matters.
Resting Energy Requirement — RER — is the number of calories a pet needs simply to exist: to breathe, keep its heart beating, regulate its temperature, and maintain basic organ function while completely at rest. It says nothing about activity, growth, or reproduction. That deliberate narrowness is exactly what makes it useful in a clinical setting, where a vet needs a stable, reproducible baseline that is not muddied by lifestyle variables.

How the Calculation Works
The formula is: RER (kcal/day) = 70 × (weight in kg)^0.75. The 0.75 exponent is the metabolic body weight scaling factor — the same one used in veterinary nutrition texts worldwide. A 10 kg dog, for example, produces RER = 70 × (10)^0.75 ≈ 70 × 5.62 ≈ 393 kcal/day.
The only input is body weight in kilograms (the calculator accepts pounds and converts automatically using 1 lb = 0.4536 kg). There are intentionally no fields for activity level, life stage, or spay/neuter status — those belong to the MER step, not the RER step.
The formula is the same for dogs and cats because RER is a species-independent physiological baseline that scales with metabolic body size, not species-specific behavioural differences.
When Vets Use RER Alone — Not MER
For a healthy pet at home, RER is a stepping-stone — you always apply a MER factor on top of it to account for activity and life stage. But in a hospital or critical-care context, vets often deliberately target RER rather than MER. A patient recovering from surgery, a pet with severe illness, or an animal being tube-fed is not exercising and is not growing; feeding to RER prevents both underfeeding (which delays recovery) and overfeeding (which can burden a compromised metabolism).
RER is also the anchor point for therapeutic feeding protocols. Weight-loss diets are sometimes set at 80% of RER at current weight; re-feeding protocols after starvation are often started at or even below RER to avoid re-feeding syndrome. In both cases the vet needs the raw RER number, not a MER estimate that includes a guessed activity factor.

Practical Guidance: Acting on the RER Number
If you have been given a RER target by a vet, use it as stated — do not apply any extra multiplier unless the vet has instructed you to. The number is already calibrated to your pet's current weight, so if your pet's weight changes, the RER changes too; recalculate each time you have a fresh weight.
Keep in mind that commercial pet foods list calorie density (kcal/cup or kcal/can) on their packaging or manufacturer website. Divide your pet's prescribed daily calorie target by the food's kcal-per-cup to get the daily serving. Weigh portions rather than scooping by eye — a standard cup can hold anywhere from 100 to 150 g of dry kibble depending on the food, which is enough variation to matter over weeks of feeding.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Treating RER as a maintenance target for a healthy, active pet at home. RER is a floor, not a ceiling — a healthy adult dog or cat doing normal activity needs more than RER, which is why the MER factor exists.
Using pounds directly in the formula. The formula requires kilograms. Entering a weight in pounds without converting will produce a result that is far too low (by roughly a factor of 2.2 on the weight value, compounded by the 0.75 exponent). The calculator handles this conversion automatically, but double-check the unit selector before reading your result.
Recalculating infrequently during a weight-management plan. Because the formula scales with weight, a pet that has lost 10% of its body weight needs a recalculated RER — using the original number throughout a weight-loss programme gradually overestimates the target.

Interpreting Your Result
The RER number you see is a daily kilocalorie figure representing absolute minimum metabolic maintenance. It is normal for it to look low compared to what you might expect — a 5 kg cat, for example, has an RER of roughly 148 kcal/day, while its actual maintenance need is likely 175–250 kcal/day once a MER factor is applied.
If the RER your calculator produces seems very different from what your pet's food packaging recommends, the likely explanations are: the pet's weight is different from what you entered, or the food recommendation is based on a full MER calculation for a typical lifestyle rather than bare RER. Neither is wrong — they are answering different questions.
A vet should be involved any time RER is being used as a therapeutic feeding target, in weight-management after illness, or when a pet has a condition that affects metabolism (kidney disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism). The formula is reliable for a healthy pet of known weight, but medical conditions can shift actual needs in ways no formula captures without clinical assessment.

Why does the calculator only ask for weight — no age or breed?
RER is deliberately weight-only. Age, breed, spay/neuter status, and activity level all affect the MER factor applied on top of RER, but RER itself is purely a function of metabolic body size (weight^0.75). My vet mentioned "caloric restriction to 80% of RER" — what does that mean?
80% of RER is a commonly used starting point for weight-loss feeding in cats (and sometimes dogs) under veterinary supervision. It means feeding 80% of the raw RER number — not 80% of the full MER. Always confirm the exact target with your vet, since the right restriction level depends on the individual patient.
Can I use the RER calculator for exotic pets or pocket pets?
The 70 × weight^0.75 formula is validated for dogs and cats. Some exotic animal veterinarians use a similar allometric formula with different coefficients for other species. For rabbits, birds, ferrets, or reptiles, consult a specialist exotic vet rather than applying this formula directly.
