Labrador Retriever puppies are exuberant, fast-growing, and food-obsessed from the earliest age — a combination that makes the first year of ownership both delightful and demanding. Getting the nutritional and physical management right during this window matters more for Labs than for many other breeds, because this is the period when hip and elbow joints are developing and when the habits that lead to adult obesity are first established.

Feeding your Labrador puppy: the basics

From 8 weeks to around 6 months, Lab puppies should be fed three times daily. This frequency supports stable blood sugar, aligns with their small stomach capacity, and reduces the risk of digestive upset from large individual meals. After 6 months, most puppies transition comfortably to twice-daily feeding, which is the standard schedule through adulthood.

The single most important food choice for a Lab puppy is using a complete, AAFCO-compliant food formulated specifically for large-breed puppies. These formulas are developed with controlled calcium-to-phosphorus ratios and moderate energy density — both of which support the steady, controlled growth rate that large-breed puppies need to develop healthy bones and joints. A general puppy food may contain more calcium and calories than is appropriate for a large breed, raising the risk of developmental orthopedic disease.

Portion sizes should be based on the food manufacturer's guidelines for your puppy's current weight — and adjusted regularly as the puppy grows. Labs grow quickly, so portions need to be rechecked and often increased every 4–6 weeks during the first six months. Do not rely on a set amount established at 8 weeks to still be appropriate at 6 months.

Managing the Lab puppy's appetite

Labrador puppies are among the most food-motivated of any breed, and that drive can appear almost immediately. It's common for new owners to interpret constant begging as a sign that the puppy isn't getting enough — but in a breed with a genetic predisposition to reduced satiety signaling, apparent hunger is not a reliable indicator of actual need.

Keeping a Lab puppy lean throughout the growth phase is more important than keeping them satisfied. Overweight puppies carry excess load on developing joints at the exact age when those joints are most vulnerable. Aim for a BCS of 4–5 out of 9: ribs easily palpable with light pressure, a visible waist from above, and no rolls of fat at the neck or base of the tail.

Treats during training are fine and useful — Labs respond extremely well to food-based positive reinforcement. Use small, low-calorie pieces (pea-sized chunks of chicken, plain carrot) and count them within the day's total calorie budget. Avoid high-fat commercial treats as the primary training reward, and never offer table scraps.

Exercise: enough but not too much

Lab puppies are energetic and will readily run, jump, and play until they exhaust themselves — often past the point that's safe for their developing skeletal system. Until growth plates close at around 12–18 months, high-impact, repetitive exercise such as long runs, forced distance walking, or jump training puts excessive stress on immature joints.

A commonly used guideline is the "5-minute rule": approximately 5 minutes of structured exercise per month of age, up to twice per day. A 3-month-old puppy therefore gets around 15 minutes of on-leash exercise twice daily. Free play in a safely enclosed garden, at the puppy's own pace, is fine in addition to this — the concern is with forced, sustained, high-impact activity, not normal puppy play.

Mental stimulation is as important as physical exercise for Lab puppies. Basic obedience training, puzzle toys, and scent games provide significant enrichment and help channel their high drive constructively. A mentally stimulated Lab puppy is a calmer, better-behaved Lab puppy.

Health priorities in the first year

Hip and elbow dysplasia are among the most significant health concerns for Labradors, and while genetics plays the dominant role, nutrition and exercise management in puppyhood can influence how severely these conditions develop. Keeping growth controlled and avoiding joint overloading early in life is the main modifiable factor within an owner's control.

Other health priorities in the first year include completing the puppy vaccination schedule (discuss timing with your vet), intestinal parasite screening and deworming, and scheduling a spay or neuter procedure at an age your veterinarian recommends for a large breed. For large breeds, there is ongoing discussion in veterinary medicine about the optimal age for neutering relative to joint health — your vet can advise on the current guidance for Labs specifically.

Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and exercise-induced collapse (EIC) are two additional hereditary conditions relevant to Labs. Responsible breeders screen parent dogs for both.
