Feeding Needs
Siberian Huskies are surprisingly efficient metabolizers and often require less food than expected for their size. Feed measured portions twice daily and adjust quantities based on activity level; over-feeding can lead to weight gain especially in less active pets. A high-quality protein-based diet supports their active lifestyle.
Alaskan Malamutes are prone to obesity if their diet is not carefully managed, as they have efficient metabolisms adapted to conserving energy. A high-quality diet with appropriate protein and fat levels is important, and portion control is essential. Meals should be divided into two daily feedings to help reduce the risk of bloat.
Water Needs
Huskies have a thick double coat that insulates them in the cold but can cause overheating in warm climates; always provide ample fresh water, especially during exercise or in hot weather.
Malamutes are active, heavy-coated dogs that need ample fresh water throughout the day, particularly after exercise. They are sensitive to heat due to their thick Arctic coat, making hydration critical during warmer months.
Exercise Needs
Siberian Huskies need at least 1–2 hours of vigorous exercise every day, including running, hiking, or pulling activities. Without sufficient exercise and mental stimulation they can become destructive; a securely fenced yard is strongly recommended as they have a strong tendency to roam.
This breed requires substantial daily exercise — at least 1–2 hours — including running, hiking, or pulling activities that tap into their working heritage. Without adequate exercise and mental stimulation, Malamutes may exhibit destructive behaviors. They thrive in active households with access to open space.
