Cat Protein Requirements

Cats need substantially more protein than dogs because of their obligate carnivore physiology. Here's what that means in practice, what AAFCO requires, and which amino acids are non-negotiable.

Of all the ways a cat's nutritional needs differ from a dog's, protein is probably the most fundamental. Cats have a metabolic requirement for protein that is meaningfully higher than most other mammalian species, and they can't simply switch to a lower-protein fuel source the way an omnivore can. Understanding why this is the case -- and what it looks like in practice -- helps make sense of why food choices matter so much for cats.

This article covers the biological reason cats are high-protein obligate carnivores, what the AAFCO minimum requirements look like across life stages, the specific amino acids cats must obtain from food, and how to spot signs that a cat isn't getting enough protein.

Why cats need more protein than dogs

Dogs, like humans, are metabolic omnivores -- when dietary protein drops, their bodies can down-regulate protein catabolism enzymes to conserve what's available. Cats cannot do this effectively. Their hepatic (liver) enzymes that break down amino acids for energy are active at a high, fixed rate regardless of dietary protein intake. This means cats are always 'burning' protein for energy to some degree, and they need a continuous supply from the diet to meet both structural (building and repairing tissues) and energy demands.

As a result, cats have a higher minimum protein requirement per kilogram of body weight than dogs. They also use dietary protein less efficiently at very low intake levels, meaning a protein-deficient diet depletes body protein stores (muscle mass) more quickly in cats than in omnivores facing a similar shortfall.

AAFCO minimum protein requirements by life stage

AAFCO sets minimum protein requirements for cat foods on a dry matter basis (the amount present once moisture is removed, allowing wet and dry foods to be compared on equal terms). For adult cats, the AAFCO minimum is 26% crude protein on a dry matter basis. For kittens and cats during gestation and lactation, the minimum rises to 30% dry matter -- reflecting the higher protein demands of growth and reproduction.

These are minimums for a complete and balanced diet, not targets. Many cat foods -- particularly those marketed as high-protein or meat-first -- exceed these minimums considerably, and for cats with healthy kidneys, higher protein intakes are generally well tolerated. The picture changes for cats with chronic kidney disease, where protein levels may need to be managed; that's a case where individual veterinary guidance matters.

It's worth noting that these percentages are on a dry matter basis. Because wet cat food can be 70–80% water, its as-fed protein percentage looks much lower than the dry matter figure -- comparing wet and dry food fairly requires converting both to a dry matter basis.

Taurine and arginine: the non-negotiable amino acids

Among the amino acids that make up dietary protein, two are particularly critical for cats: taurine and arginine, both of which cats must obtain from their food.

Taurine is not an essential amino acid for most mammals because they can synthesise it from cysteine and methionine. Cats have very low activity of the enzyme responsible for this conversion and cannot produce adequate taurine themselves. Dietary taurine is essential for normal heart muscle function, retinal health, and fetal development. Deficiency causes dilated cardiomyopathy and central retinal degeneration, both of which can develop relatively quickly on a taurine-deficient diet. AAFCO requires a minimum of 0.1% taurine (dry matter) for adult dry cat food and 0.17% for wet food, with the higher minimum for wet food reflecting reduced bioavailability from processing.

Arginine is required by cats in unusually high amounts because of their role in the urea cycle -- the process by which the body converts ammonia (a byproduct of protein metabolism) into urea for excretion. Because cats use so much protein for energy, they produce significant ammonia, and arginine deficiency can cause a rapid and dangerous build-up of blood ammonia. Even a single meal deficient in arginine can cause acute symptoms in cats. This is one reason cats cannot safely eat diets designed for dogs or humans, which may meet human or dog arginine requirements but fall short of what cats need.

Protein quality and digestibility

Not all protein is created equal for cats. Protein quality relates to its amino acid profile and how digestible it is -- a high-quality animal protein like chicken, turkey, or fish provides a profile closely matched to what cats need and is generally well digested. Plant proteins (soy, corn gluten, wheat gluten) can contribute to the crude protein percentage on a label but may be lower in limiting amino acids that cats need, particularly taurine and certain essential amino acids present mainly in animal tissue.

Digestibility is also relevant. A cat that doesn't efficiently absorb the protein it eats doesn't benefit from it. High-quality animal proteins are typically more digestible for cats than plant-based alternatives, which is another reason why the protein source matters alongside the total protein percentage.

Signs of inadequate protein intake

Protein deficiency in cats can manifest in several ways. Muscle wasting -- a visible loss of muscle mass, particularly over the spine and hindquarters -- is one of the clearest signs that a cat isn't getting or absorbing enough protein. In senior cats, muscle loss can occur even with adequate protein intake if the protein isn't highly digestible, which is one reason senior cat foods often prioritise protein quality alongside quantity.

Other signs of inadequate protein include a dull, dry, or poor-quality coat (protein is essential for healthy hair growth), slow wound healing, reduced immune function, lethargy, and weight loss that doesn't respond to increasing food intake. In kittens, inadequate protein intake stunts growth and can cause developmental problems.

If your cat is eating a complete commercial food labelled as meeting AAFCO requirements for their life stage, outright protein deficiency is unlikely. Concerns arise most often with homemade diets, very low-quality commercial foods that use highly processed plant proteins to meet the minimum numbers, or in cats with conditions that impair absorption (like inflammatory bowel disease).

When to talk to your vet about protein

For most healthy cats on a complete commercial diet, protein is not something that needs active management -- the food handles it. Veterinary involvement becomes important in a few specific situations.

Cats with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are the main group where protein management is a real clinical decision. Traditional guidance was to significantly restrict protein in CKD cats, but current thinking is more nuanced -- excessive restriction can cause muscle wasting, while very high protein can contribute to waste product build-up. The appropriate level depends on the stage of disease and is best determined by a vet with regular monitoring.

Cats on homemade diets, cats that are losing muscle mass despite apparently eating well, and cats with digestive conditions that may affect absorption are all situations where a vet conversation about protein intake is worthwhile. Sudden, unexplained weight loss or muscle wasting in any cat is a reason to seek veterinary attention rather than attempting a nutritional fix at home.
