Feeding a cat a homemade diet is possible, but it requires more care than most owners expect. Here's what's involved, why taurine matters so much, and how to do it safely.

The appeal of homemade cat food is easy to understand -- you control every ingredient, you know exactly what your cat is eating, and for cats with allergies or sensitivities it can feel like the cleanest option. The reality, however, is that homemade diets for cats carry significant nutritional risk if they're not carefully formulated. Cats are obligate carnivores with several nutrient requirements that are non-negotiable, and getting those wrong has serious health consequences.

This guide covers what homemade feeding actually involves, the nutrients most likely to go wrong, the role of a veterinary nutritionist, and the practical steps that separate a safe homemade diet from a well-meaning one that quietly causes harm.

Why cats are nutritionally different from dogs

Cats are obligate carnivores -- a designation that reflects genuine metabolic differences, not just a preference for meat. Unlike dogs (and humans), cats have a limited ability to synthesise several nutrients that other species can make from precursors. They must obtain these nutrients pre-formed from animal tissue, because they lack or have very low activity of the enzymes needed to produce them from plant-based sources.

This makes the consequences of a nutritional gap in a homemade cat diet faster and more severe than in a dog. A dog eating a slightly imbalanced homemade diet may take months or years to show deficiency signs; a cat on a taurine-deficient diet can develop serious cardiac disease within weeks to months. That's the core reason that homemade cat diets require a level of precision that goes beyond what most home cooks can achieve by intuition alone.

Taurine: the most critical nutrient to get right

Taurine is an amino acid that cats cannot synthesise in adequate amounts on their own -- they must consume it from food. It plays essential roles in heart muscle function, vision, reproduction, and immune health. Taurine deficiency in cats leads to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a potentially fatal heart condition, and central retinal degeneration that can cause permanent blindness.

Most fresh meats contain taurine, but the amount varies by protein source and preparation method. Cooking, freezing, and prolonged heat exposure all reduce taurine content. This means that a recipe based on fresh muscle meat may appear adequate on paper but deliver less taurine in practice than the raw figures suggest. For this reason, most veterinary nutritionists recommend supplementing taurine in homemade diets even when meat is the primary ingredient, rather than relying on food sources alone.

The minimum taurine requirement for adult cats set by AAFCO is 0.1% on a dry matter basis for extruded (dry) diets and 0.17% for canned diets -- the higher minimum for canned foods reflects the reduced bioavailability from cooking. Homemade diets should account for this reduced availability too.

Other nutrients commonly missing from homemade recipes

Taurine gets the most attention, but it's far from the only nutrient cats commonly get too little of on homemade diets. Calcium and phosphorus balance is a frequent problem: plain muscle meat is high in phosphorus and very low in calcium, so a diet of meat without bone meal or a calcium supplement leads to a serious imbalance. Over time, this causes nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism -- the body withdraws calcium from bones to compensate, weakening the skeleton.

Vitamin D is another common gap. Cats cannot synthesise vitamin D efficiently from sunlight as humans can; they need to obtain it from food or supplements. Arachidonic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid), niacin, and vitamin A are additional nutrients that cats cannot synthesise adequately from plant precursors and must receive pre-formed from animal tissue. A recipe built around muscle meat, rice, and vegetables will almost certainly be deficient in at least several of these.

Iodine deficiency is also a documented problem in some homemade and raw diets and can cause thyroid dysfunction. In short, the list of nutrients that need explicit attention in a homemade cat diet is long, and the consequences of missing them are real.

Why a veterinary nutritionist formulation matters

A board-certified veterinary nutritionist (DACVN) can analyse a proposed homemade recipe against your cat's life-stage requirements and identify gaps that are impossible to spot by eye. They can also account for your cat's individual health status -- kidney disease, for example, changes protein and phosphorus targets significantly -- and recommend specific supplements to fill any nutritional gaps.

This is a very different service from a generic homemade recipe found online. Published homemade cat recipes -- even those from well-meaning sources -- are frequently found to be nutritionally inadequate when formally analysed. A study reviewed by the WSAVA nutrition guidelines noted that the majority of popular homemade pet food recipes circulating online lacked one or more essential nutrients at appropriate levels.

Working with a nutritionist doesn't mean you can never adjust the diet again -- it means you have a formulated baseline that you know is complete, which you then maintain consistently. Many veterinary schools offer nutritional consultation services, and veterinary nutritionists can often be reached through referral from your primary vet.

Common pitfalls in homemade cat feeding

The most common mistake is using a recipe that looks nutritionally complete but hasn't been formally verified. Chicken, rice, and vegetables is a typical example -- it's a balanced human meal but is deficient in taurine, calcium, several vitamins, and essential fatty acids for a cat.

A second common pitfall is inconsistency. Cats can be selective eaters, and owners sometimes swap ingredients based on what the cat accepts that week. Substituting ingredients in a formulated recipe can shift the nutrient balance significantly -- a recipe formulated around chicken thigh is a different nutritional profile from one using chicken breast, because fat and taurine content differ.

Raw meat diets carry an additional risk: bacterial contamination (Salmonella, Listeria, E. coli) that can affect both the cat and the humans handling the food. The AVMA and other veterinary organisations advise caution with raw meat diets for this reason, particularly in households with immunocompromised people, children, or elderly individuals. If a raw approach is chosen, food safety handling practices need to be followed carefully.

Finally, adding supplements on top of a commercial complete diet in the belief that more is better can cause problems too. Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) accumulate in the body and can reach toxic levels with over-supplementation. Any supplementation should be guided by a nutritionist rather than done by intuition.

When to talk to your vet

Before switching your cat to a homemade diet, a vet conversation is the right starting point -- not just to get a referral to a nutritionist, but to baseline your cat's weight, body condition, and relevant bloodwork. This gives you a comparison point to confirm the diet is working as intended once it's been in place for a few months.

Any cat on a homemade diet should have a check-up at least once a year that includes body condition assessment and relevant bloodwork (including kidney and liver values). If your cat loses or gains weight unexpectedly, develops a dull coat, shows reduced energy, or changes their eating behaviour on the homemade diet, those are signs worth discussing with your vet promptly rather than waiting for a scheduled visit.

Cats with existing health conditions -- kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease -- should have their diet formulated with those conditions explicitly in mind. A general homemade recipe, even a professionally formulated one for a healthy cat, may not be appropriate for a cat managing a chronic illness.
