Most adult Himalayans weigh between 3 and 5.5 kg (6.6–12.1 lb). Males tend toward the upper end, females toward the lower. Body condition assessment by feel (rib palpation) is more reliable than the scale alone for this heavily-coated breed.

How can I tell if my Himalayan is overweight under all that fur?

Feel the ribs directly through the coat with firm but gentle finger pressure. At ideal weight you should feel individual ribs distinctly with minimal effort. If you have to press hard to feel them, or if you feel a thick layer of soft padding over the ribs, the cat is likely overweight.

My Himalayan has trouble grooming its tail. Is that just the coat?

Long coats do require more effort to maintain, but a cat that consistently fails to groom its hindquarters or tail base may be overweight — excess abdominal fat limits the flexibility needed to reach those areas. It can also reflect arthritis. Either warrants a veterinary check.
