Ticks transmit serious diseases to dogs and can affect cats too. Here is an overview of tick-borne disease risk, seasonal and regional factors, prevention product options, and what to do after outdoor time.

Ticks are more than an unpleasant discovery after a walk -- they are efficient vectors of several bacterial and viral diseases, some of which are serious and can be difficult to diagnose and treat. Dogs are particularly vulnerable because of their tendency to move through grass and brush where ticks wait for passing hosts. Cats that go outdoors are also exposed, though they are generally considered lower risk for some tick-borne diseases than dogs.

This guide covers the main tick-borne diseases relevant to companion animals, how seasonal and regional factors shape risk, the major categories of prevention products available, and the practical habits -- particularly tick checks after outdoor time -- that make a real difference.

Tick-borne diseases affecting dogs and cats

Lyme disease (caused by Borrelia burgdorferi) is one of the most well-known tick-borne diseases in dogs, transmitted by the deer tick (Ixodes scapularis in the eastern US, Ixodes pacificus on the west coast). Signs in dogs can include lameness (which may shift from leg to leg), lethargy, fever, and reduced appetite. A serious but less common complication is Lyme nephritis, a kidney condition that can develop in some infected dogs. Notably, most cats seem to be relatively resistant to developing clinical Lyme disease even when exposed, though they can carry the organism.

Ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis are tick-borne bacterial infections that cause fever, lethargy, reduced appetite, and can affect blood platelet counts -- causing bleeding problems in severe cases. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF), despite its regional-sounding name, is found across much of North America and beyond, transmitted by several tick species; it can cause serious illness and is considered a veterinary emergency when suspected.

Tick paralysis -- a neurological condition caused by a toxin in the saliva of certain feeding female ticks -- is less well-known but can cause rapid ascending paralysis in dogs and, to a lesser extent, cats. It resolves after the tick is removed, but identifying and removing an attached tick on a suddenly weak dog is the critical step.

Seasonal and regional risk factors

Tick risk varies significantly by geography and season, but the traditional idea that ticks are only an issue in warm months is no longer fully accurate in many regions. Black-legged ticks (deer ticks) can remain active at temperatures above freezing, and tick-borne disease risk in some areas of North America is now considered year-round.

Geographic areas with established Lyme disease risk include much of the northeastern and upper midwestern United States, parts of the Pacific coast, and areas of Canada and Europe. However, tick ranges are expanding, and species distributions change over time -- the current risk map in your region is best checked with your vet or local veterinary public health resources, rather than relying on what was true 10 years ago.

Dogs and owners in areas with tall grass, leaf litter, wooded trails, or wildlife activity are at higher risk than those in urban environments without such habitats. But suburban and semi-rural environments have meaningful tick populations too, particularly where deer or other wildlife are present.

Tick prevention product categories

Tick prevention products for dogs fall into several categories. Topical spot-on treatments applied monthly typically include active ingredients that kill ticks on contact or after they bite. Oral tick prevention (prescription products) work systemically, killing ticks after they attach and begin feeding -- the tick must bite to be exposed, but death occurs before disease transmission in most cases when the product is used as directed. Tick-killing products should not be confused with repellents -- most veterinary tick prevention products work by killing attached ticks rather than preventing attachment.

Flea and tick collars vary widely in efficacy by formulation. Newer prescription-strength collars (with active ingredients like imidacloprid and flumethrin) provide broader coverage and longer duration than older over-the-counter collar formulations. Environmental sprays and yard treatments can reduce tick habitat in immediately managed outdoor areas but are not a substitute for on-pet prevention.

For cats, tick prevention options are more limited than for dogs because cats are sensitive to several insecticide classes. Products must be specifically labeled for cats -- never apply a dog tick product to a cat. Permethrin, common in many dog tick preventives and some environmental sprays, is toxic to cats. Consult your vet for cat-safe options.

The Lyme disease vaccine for dogs

A vaccine against Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi) is available for dogs and is considered a non-core vaccine by veterinary guidelines -- meaning it's recommended based on exposure risk rather than for every dog universally. Dogs in or traveling to areas with high Lyme disease prevalence, particularly those that spend significant time in tick-prone habitats, are strong candidates for the vaccine.

The Lyme vaccine works by targeting the Borrelia organism and also by generating antibodies that can kill the bacterium inside the feeding tick before it is transmitted to the dog. It is typically given as a two-dose initial series followed by annual boosters. The vaccine does not replace tick prevention products -- it's an additional layer of protection most useful in high-risk situations.

Tick-check habits after outdoor time

Tick prevention products significantly reduce risk, but no product provides 100% protection -- a tick check after outdoor time in high-risk areas adds an important extra layer. Ticks that are found and removed promptly (within 24-36 hours of attachment for most species) are much less likely to transmit disease than ticks that have been feeding for longer.

A thorough tick check on a dog involves running your hands over the entire body, paying particular attention to areas where ticks commonly attach: around the head and ears, under the collar, in the armpits and groin, between the toes, and around the tail. Ticks can be small -- nymph-stage deer ticks are roughly the size of a poppy seed and can be easy to miss.

To remove an attached tick, use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool. Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull upward with steady, even pressure -- do not twist, crush, or use heat or petroleum jelly, as these can cause the tick to release fluids that may increase transmission risk. After removal, clean the bite site with rubbing alcohol and wash your hands. Saving the tick in a container for identification by your vet is useful if you develop concerns about disease transmission.

Signs of tick-borne illness and when to see a vet

Even with excellent prevention, ticks can occasionally be missed, and some level of risk remains for dogs that spend time outdoors. Knowing the warning signs of tick-borne disease is important: unexplained fever, sudden lethargy, reduced appetite, joint pain or shifting lameness, swollen lymph nodes, or unusual bruising or bleeding. These signs can develop days to weeks after a tick exposure.

Any of these signs in a dog that has had recent outdoor exposure in a tick-endemic area warrants a prompt vet visit rather than a wait-and-see approach. Tick-borne diseases are generally more treatable when caught early. Your vet may also recommend periodic testing for tick-borne diseases (some annual heartworm blood tests include a Lyme and other tick-disease screen) as part of routine care in high-risk areas.
