Australian Cattle Dog

The Australian Cattle Dog, also known as the Blue Heeler or Queensland Heeler, was developed in 19th-century Australia by crossing British herding dogs with the native Dingo to create a breed capable of driving cattle across vast, rugged terrain. They are remarkably hardy, agile, and intelligent working dogs. Their herding instinct is strong, and they may attempt to herd children and other animals.

Feeding Guide

Australian Cattle Dogs are highly active and require a nutrient-dense, high-protein diet calibrated to their significant energy expenditure. Overfeeding should be avoided, especially in less active dogs, as they can gain weight if their exercise regime decreases. Two structured meals per day support steady energy and digestive health.

Water Needs

Given their high activity levels and love of outdoor work, Australian Cattle Dogs need constant access to fresh water, particularly in warm climates. They are built for endurance but can overheat without proper hydration.

Exercise Guide

Australian Cattle Dogs need at least 1–2 hours of vigorous exercise daily, supplemented by mental challenges such as herding, agility, or advanced obedience training. They are not suited to apartment living or sedentary households. Without adequate stimulation, they may become restless, destructive, or obsessive.
