Belgian Malinois

Belgian Malinois

The Belgian Malinois is one of four Belgian herding breeds and was developed in the city of Malines (Mechelen), Belgium, during the late 19th century. It is the preferred breed of military and police forces worldwide due to its extraordinary drive, intelligence, and physical capability. The Malinois is lean, muscular, and built for endurance, bearing a superficial resemblance to a German Shepherd Dog. While it can be a devoted family dog in experienced hands, it demands an exceptional level of training, exercise, and mental engagement.

Feeding Guide

Belgian Malinois are high-performance dogs that benefit from a protein-rich, high-quality diet suited to their intense energy demands. Feeding two measured meals daily supports their metabolism without overloading their digestive system; bloat risk is moderate in working dogs exercised heavily. Caloric intake should be adjusted based on the dog's current activity level, as heavily worked dogs need significantly more than sedentary pets.

Water Needs

Due to their extremely high activity level, Belgian Malinois need constant access to fresh water and should be offered water frequently during and after training sessions or physical work.

Exercise Guide

Belgian Malinois require a minimum of 60–90 minutes of intense exercise daily, but most working individuals need even more. They excel at Schutzhund/IPO, agility, obedience, search and rescue, and bite work. Insufficient exercise and mental stimulation can lead to destructive behavior, anxiety, and redirected aggression.
